Pokemon GO players are unhappy with the current Routes limitation and a lack of communication regarding the feature from developer Niantic. The Routes feature allows Pokemon GO players to chart their own paths and share them with other players, but the limitations have negatively affected the experience for many members of the community.

Pokemon GO Routes were made available with the launch of the Blaze New Trails event this past July. Players were incentivized to make Routes or explore user-created Routes to earn rewards such as Hyper Potions, XP, Stardust, and Ultra Balls. Zygarde Cells could be acquired by exploring Routes as well, allowing players to change Legendary Pokemon Zygarde into a new form after obtaining enough Zygarde Cells. However, the launch of Routes was plagued with several bugs and issues, and the incremental rollout of the feature meant that many players were unable to acquire Zygarde Cells.a

The Routes feature continues to be heavily criticized by the Pokemon GO community due to a limitation where only five Routes may be created in a 30-day period. On Twitter, Niantic Support replied to a Pokemon GO fan that encountered this limitation, confirming that the Routes limit may be changed in the future as Niantic evaluates the feature. Players are frustrated with Niantic Support’s official response since Pokemon GO does not outright state this limitation, and other players note that they are still unable to create their first Route in the game.

Pokemon GO fans on Twitter, including user BossDokins, believe the Routes limitation and the feature’s lack of availability are preventing the game from growing an even bigger community. For example, some Pokemon GO players are unable to find Routes in their local areas and nearby cities, preventing the location from being a vital source of rewards and Zygarde Cells.

Pokemon GO players are still having issues gathering Zygarde Cells, and some think the Routes limitation paints Niantic in a bad light once more. Instead of promoting exploration, the implementation of Routes has discouraged players from using the feature due to its many issues. Time will tell if Niantic will quickly correct this problem with bug fixes, and an official notice regarding the Routes feature and the developer’s next steps could help alleviate some of the community’s frustrations.

The Poliwag July 2023 Community Day event also faced issues of its own involving the 50% reduction in trading costs. This particular issue appears to be common throughout past Community Day events, so it will be interesting to see if Niantic can ensure future Community Day events do not suffer from bugs and other problems involving in-game bonuses.
